Off Season Workout Program

Off season workout program is currently envisioned at 3 nights per week at the High School.  We want to focus on pitching and hitting using the bullpen mounds and the cage.  Assuming everything gets put back together and Coach Armstrong is amenable (and Legion schedule accommodates), I am in intending to start MWF 6-8 beginning July 8 after the holiday weekend.  this schedule will be somewhat flexible based on our summer schedule, but would like to invite as many BR level boys down as are interested. Low key and fun practice but we'd like to see all the pitchers out for 50 balls of practice throws and working on location and offspeed pitches.  We will continue doing this until football starts and possibly beyond if there are interested boys that are not playing football.  I am hoping there will be a window of a month or so we can continue this after football before the bad weather sets in.  I would really like to get as much pitching and hitting work in before the weather turns bad and we turn the calendar into gym time.

Thanks as always for a completely awesome season.  We had a really good first run at this league 13-year olds and we're going to work hard and come out and dominate this league next year.  Let's stay focused through the offseason and take the next step as ball players.  Hope to see you on Monday  July 8 at the high school.

Post-season & tournament

First, Shelley 2 is still in the tournament - WAY TO GO!!!  They play tonight at 6:00 at Sunnyside South.  If they win, they play tomorrow night at Cat Thompson.  Head out in your Shelley gear and show some support!

Brett and Dan will be doing some post-season work starting next week.  Any boys that just can't get enough baseball are more than welcome.  Stay tuned for time and location.

We will let you know as soon as we have the season-end picnic/baseball awards planned.  It will be pot-luck and on a week-night.

Shelley 2 game MOVED

The Shelley 2 game has been moved to the Firth High School field.  The game will start at 6:30.  To get there, head to Firth on Hwy 91.  Turn right on Lincoln.  The ballpark will be on the right.

Follow up

Hey folks,
I know things got rough the last couple of games JV1, but I sure hope this in no way diminishes in anyone's view what we accomplished and how proud we are of all of these boys and the effort they put in this year.  I am already excited for next year.  If anyone wants to come out and support JV-2 or the Varsity teams, Amy has posted the game info below.  We will be out supporting JV-2 against Hillcrest 1 tonight.  hope to see a few folks there.

Ongoing tournaments

Well, JV-1 sure had a rough end to the season, but what a great performance from JV-2 last night.  We are just so proud of all of our boys and love seeing how they support each other.

JV-2 plays at Tautphaus tonight vs Hillcrest 1.  Varsity plays at Sunnyside South vs Bonneville.  It would sure be great to see boys out supporting their future teammates.  As always, I am happy to give rides to any boys to and from the game.

Once all the dust settles, we'll plan a baseball family picnic.

Shelley Baseball Tonight

Hey everyone.  Should be a pretty special night, first time most (all?) of these boys have played on the high school field.  Should be a neat experience and we're hoping everyone plays well and has fun.  Be there at 5:30 and game time will be 6:00.  Try to come early if you can and enjoy what I hope will be the first of many games on this field as the boys move into high school and maybe legion ball.  Shelley V. Shelley at Shelley. First home game ever for everyone.  See you all tonight.

This is why we play tournaments

Take a look at the Varsity bracket below.  EVERY GAME was an upset.  Shelley (6th) beat Hillcrest 1 (3rd), Skyline (7th) beat Idaho Falls (2nd), Firth (5th) beat Bonneville (4th).  Nice job, boys!

Varsity Tournament Bracket FINAL

Here is the bracket for the VARSITY Tournament.  I will keep this updated with all the information I have.

Babe Ruth Tournament Rules

Games shall be played under the Babe Ruth rule book AND LOCAL BY-LAWS unless specified below.

1.         GAMES TIMES: 6:00 p.m. unless otherwise advised.

2.         No new inning may begin after 2 hours (new inning starts when the last recorded out is made against the home team).

3.         If, after expiration of regulation time, or seven innings, whichever occurs earlier, a game is tied, teams will continue play utilizing the tie breaker rule – last recorded out from previous inning starts on 2nd base and inning starts with no outs.   There will be no time limit for the championship game.  The championship games will consist of 7 innings.   Championship games will NOT have 2 hour time limit.  Additional innings will be used if, at the conclusion of the seventh inning, the game is tied.

4.         No runs restrictions per inning.  Mercy rule in effect.  See #6

5.         Pitching:

                        A.        Pitchers may pitch no more than15 innings during the entire tournament.  If a pitcher has pitched one pitch to a batter, that constitutes an inning pitched.

                        B.        No pitcher may pitch more than seven (7) innings in two consecutive games.  (See page 25 of Rule book).  This is a rolling 7 innings (i.e. can pitch 4 innings in game #1; 3 innings in game #2; 4 innings in game #3 etc).

                        C.        A starting pitcher may reenter as a pitcher in the same game as long as said pitcher has not exceed the allowable innings.  No other pitcher may reenter after being removed from the mound.

                        D.        A violation of these pitching rules will result in a forfeit of the game in which the violation occurred and will result in the particular pitcher being ineligible to pitch the remainder of the tournament.

                        E.         Every manager will record pitchers used during every game on a “Pitching Record” provided by the league.  The information required in this record will include the pitcher’s name, jersey number and innings pitched for each game.  The information will be recorded in ink and will be updated throughout the game as pitching changes are made.  Prior to the start of a game, the Managers will exchange Pitching Records so that both teams are aware of which players are eligible and which are ineligible.  At the conclusion of the game the Pitching Record will be signed by both coaches and the umpire.  Any disputes regarding a pitcher’s eligibility must be resolved prior to the pitcher throwing a pitch.

                        F.         If a manager fails to complete the Pitching Record as required, said failure will result in the presumption that all players on the team’s roster have exceeded the allowable innings.  The result of all players’ ineligibility will result in a forfeit of the remaining tournament games for that manager’s team.

6.         MERCY RULE: 10 run rule in effect after 5 innings (4 ½ for home team) for all games, except for championship games.

7.         HOME TEAM:  The higher seeded team shall be home team throughout the tournament with the exception of the championship game.  For the championship game, home team will be determined by a coin flip.

8.         NUMBER OF PLAYERS NEEDED TO PLAY:  Our local rule allows a team to play with 8 players.  If a JV or Varsity team has fewer than 10 players for any particular game, that team may request permission from the league for additional players from another team within that team’s high school boundary.

8.1       If a Varsity team requests additional players those players will be drawn from the JV within the same high school boundary.

8.2       If a JV teams requests additional players, those additional players shall first be drawn from the other JV team within that team’s high school boundary.  If there is no second JV team within the same boundary, or there other JV team is playing the same night, then permission maybe sought from the league for Varsity players to move down to assist the JV team in need of players.

8.3       The league will help determine which players will move, after talking with the team’s coaches.

8.4       Under no circumstance will players be moved up or down from a team on a night when that team has a game.

9.         PROTESTS: Any protest shall be resolved before the game will continue.  Only rule infractions are subject to protest, not umpire discretionary calls.  The Tournament coordinator shall render the final decision.

10.       EJECTIONS: If any player, Manager, Coach or fan is ejected from any tournament game, the ejected individual shall also be suspended from attending the next game.  If an ejected individual refuses to leave the game following the ejection, that individual’s team will forfeit the game.  All Managers and coaches should re-read Rules 4.06, 4.07, 4.08, 4.15(f), 9.01 and 9.05 in rule book

11.       JUDGMENT CALLS: RULE 9.02 --

“Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final.  No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decision.

Players leaving their position in the field or on base, or managers or coaches leaving the bench or coaches box, to argue on BALLS and STRIKES will not be permitted.  They should be warned if they start for the plate to protest the call.  If they continue, they will be ejected from the game.

12.       RULE 9.05(d) –

“After receiving the umpire’s report that a trainer, manager, coach or player has been disqualified, the league president shall impose such penalty as he deems justified, and shall notify the person penalized and the manager of the club of which the penalized person is a member.”

Great Season Shelley JV

Great game to wrap up the regular season.  8-3 and alone in second place.  Really really impressed with the effort and improvement.  Jace was our MVP last night, both on offense and defense.  2 great catches in RF, one turning into a double play, and hitting the ball every time up.  Can't do much better than that.  Thanks to everyone for a fun and productive season.  Stay tuned for playoff schedule.

Happy Tuesday

Looking forward to a good practice tonight at Riverview fields, 6:00 PM.  sorry last night was so lame, not much you can do when the opponent can't field a team. We are solidly in 2nd place still and can secure that for sure with a win tomorrow night.  Thanks to everyone for all the participation and let's have a good couple of nights to finish out the regular season.

Both JV teams will be playing at Sunnyside Monday night.  JV-1 will be at Sunnyside North vs. Skyline and JV-2 will be at Sunnyside South vs. Idaho Falls 2.  All parents and fans, if there is a lull in your team's game, take the 20 steps over to the other field and cheer on the other team for a play or two - let's make it an All-Shelley night!

John's team should arrive at 5:20, Brett's at 5:30 for warmup.

Good luck, and GO RUSSETS!

2nd Place Shelley Red (1)

I just took a look at the standings and we are solidly in 2nd place for the entire Babe Ruth JV, with 3 games to play.  Thanks to all of the boys for the hard work this far and the parents for the support and encouragement.  That was a heck of a win last night, standing strong and beating (for the second time), the team I think is our closest competition.  What a catch by Grant in CF.  Enjoy those photos, those may be the cover photo for Shelley youth baseball for all of our promotions next year.  Also don't forget about Reese's double play at second.  Without those awesome plays, we don't win that game.  I remain so proud of these guys for the way that they hang in and keep scrapping every play.  Let's finish out the week with a great effort tonight.  See you then.

Great night last night

Thanks to both teams last night for a fun game.  Both teams played hard and hung in there.  Hopefully both teams can finish strong to conclude the season and we can play a third game in the playoffs.  The 2 Shelley/Shelley games are the funnest games we've played all year.

Special congratulations to Morgan for his first inning pitching at the Babe Ruth level.  I'm not sure of how much Beau has pitched but I was thrilled to see both him and Levi do so well on the mound.  I am really looking forward to next year!

Grant's diving catch in CF in that last inning was probably the defensive play of the year (at least on our side).  That was fun to watch.

Thanks, as always, boys and parents.

Shelley vs Shelley, part 2

This week we get another fun night of All-Shelley baseball.  The last game was well-played by both teams and very close.  We're all looking forward to another good game!

The game will be at Sunnyside South this time, starting at 6:00 PM on Tuesday.  Players should be ready to start their warmup by 5:30.

Practice Monday at 6.

Other games for JV-1 this week will be Thursday and Friday at Cat Thompson. JV-1 will take Wednesday off - rest, relax and watch some baseball.

JV-2 will finish their week with games Thursday and Friday at Freeman Park.  Good luck!

If you want to watch some good baseball, we encourage all players to go watch the Shelley Legion Baseball team.  They will be playing a double-header at Shelley High School on Wednesday.  Games will start at 4:00 and again at 6:00 PM.  Boys that need rides to/from the game, contact Amy Welty.  Wear your Shelley gear and go support our Shelley Legion team!

Again Very Proud of the Effort

The Shelley JV-1 really held tough against a very good (and very old) Idaho Falls #2 on Friday night.  Again, very proud of the effort.  Cordell did an excellent job at 1st base and the pitching was very solid.  Once we get our early game defensive problems figured out (mostly nerves I think).  We are going to be able to hang with these guys.  I was especially happy with the way we started going after these guys on the basepaths, both from the catcher and pitcher spot.  We are going to learn how to play this game to make teams pay for screwing around on the base paths, and I saw a lot of improvement in that area, particularly with Zach, Austin, and Cordell at the corners.  Come ready to practice hard Monday, we have lot of work to do for hitting and situational fielding.  The coaches and parents love this team and we are looking forward to finishing the season strong.
