I apologize for the scheduling problem - we are working on finding some gym time. I will keep you all posted.
In the mean time, when the weather cooperates, boys can be outside practicing their swing. A rope hung up with a knot just above knee level makes a great, cheap target. 100 swings a day with good technique will make swinging the bat second nature. Remember, Super 8 Hitting:

2014 Baseball TRYOUTS!!!!
OPEN GYM:
Starts next week, possibly MONDAY, February 24th, at Riverview School. As soon as we have a definite schedule I will post it here. We highly encourage all boys wanting to be part of the program this year to attend open gym to prepare for tryouts.
TEAMS:
At minimum, there will be one JV team and one Varsity team. If there is sufficient interest, we will have 2 JV teams. Like last year, coaches will get together and split 2 JV teams as evenly as possible to assure lots of playing time for all players.
TRYOUTS:
March 29 at 1:00 PM at the high school ball field. If the weather does not cooperate, we will move to a gym.
Tryouts, will be full, open and fair. No one is guaranteed a spot on the varsity team - any boy that demonstrates good skills and a willingness to work has a chance to make the team. We will evaluate what we know about the way the boys have performed in the past, but really want to have an open mind about their capabilities this year and how we expect them to perform. With that in mind - more time at open gym will help with the evaluation process.
Attitude evaluation will comprise about HALF of the boys' scores through the tryout process. As we cross the threshold from boys baseball to men's baseball, we expect the young men to conduct themselves accordingly. This means a positive, helpful, and encouraging attitude towards oneself, one's teammates, and players at lower levels throughout the Shelley Youth Baseball Program. This also means good sportsmanship with regard to umpires, league officials and opposing teams. Finally, this means being coachable, paying attention, and hustling on the baseball field - we do not walk on the baseball field.
We will be contacting boys/parents individually that we think, or know, are planning to play again to ensure we have the correct number of teams and coaches assembled.
Signups are available from coaches, at the schools, from Tammie Peterson, at the city office, and will be online soon. We prefer a hard copy form and payment delivered to Tammie so we know how many are signing up as soon as we can. If you intend to play, please let us know verbally so we make certain we are set up for the correct number of boys. THERE WILL BE A HARD CUTOFF for registration this year of 4/12/14. It is our hope that we can have everyone interested signed up and in attendance at the 3/29 skills day/tryouts so we can establish final rosters that weekend. If we are able to do this, we will start team practices on Monday, March 31. Young men not signed up by 3/29 and/or not in attendance at the skills day will be at a serious disadvantage for consideration for the varsity team.
BASEBALL CAMP:
The Shelley High School Baseball Camp will be help Saturday, April 5th at the high school. All Babe Ruth age kids should plan to attend.
QUESTIONS???
Contact Tammie Peterson or Amy Welty
We are all so excited to start another great year of Shelley Baseball.
Go Russets!!!
